ABOUT DEPARTMENT

Trakya University Genetics and Bioengineering Department
Resim

Genetics and Bioengineering which is one of the popular engineering fields representing the fastest growing opportunities for employment and increase in the progression rate through the world in the recent years. Turkey is poised to become the European Union region's engineering and technology, so the appropriate genetic engineers and bioengineers are needed with an increasing emphasis. Therefore, Trakya University Faculty of Engineering Department of Genetics and Bioengineering started its program in 2014.

There is currently two Associated Professors and three assistant professors in the Department. Head of Department Associated Professor Yalcin Kaya and Vice-Head Assistant Professor Necmi Beser have made successful task and have a vast experience in plant breeding and genetics with performing in Trakya Agricultural Research Institute in Edirne for many years. Other Faculty, Associated Professor Dr. Semra Hasancebi worked in the Resarch Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) Institute for Genetics Engineering and has conducted and completed many important research studies in molecular genetics. Assistant Professor Suleyman Kok has been actively working in successful projects in animal genetics. The recent Faculty, Assistant Professor Gokhan Kacar has been performing molecular simulations of biomaterials with special emphasis on self-healing polymers, gels and surfaces.

Our department aims providing and teaching the necessary skills to educate the students in genetics and bioengineering area with today's popular and current topics with being aware of the ethical and professional responsibilities. In the undergraduate program, students will be thought and educated to combine conventional breeding with the genetic and biological methods such as Molecular Genetics, Bioinformatics, Nanobiotechnology, Tissue Engineering, Biomaterials. The graduates of the department will have the necessary skills to generate solutions in various fields such as stem cell technologies, pharmaceutical, clinical medicine, forensic medicine, polymers and biomaterials which makes them capable of competing in the international arena as trained leaders.

In addition to the subjects mentioned above, the department seeks to contribute to the local economy by serving activities in the agricultural area, food science, animal breeding and genetics, and other aspects of bioengineering applications. The industry in Edirne is mainly based on agriculture (vegetable oil, dairy products, flour and flour products, etc.). Therefore, our department will be actively involved in problems of agricultural industry, evaluation of agricultural wastes, bioproducts, utilization of natural resources, improvement of yeast technology in dairy products, value-added vegetable oils high products, etc. Therefore, the department will contribute to the development of the region and the society in agriculture, animals, molecular biology, genetics as well as generating scientific fundamental knowledge and added-value in biomaterials, biopolymers and nanotechnology.

Graduates of the department are expected to find jobs in the academia, industry (pharmaceutical, agricultural, food, biomedical, etc.), clinical medicine and diagnostics centers, forensics, international research centers and laboratories with public institutions, together with seed companies, IVF clinics, IVF Centers and international biotechnology and biomedical companies.
